Safe.Journalism.sk initiative (Bezpečná.žurnalistika.sk) was created because the safety of journalists is one of the most important challenges in Slovakia. Five years after the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, the number of attacks against journalists is not decreasing. On the contrary, it seems the trend is the opposite. The survey we have conducted suggests that more than two-thirds of Slovak journalists have faced attacks and/or threats over the last year because of their work.
Investigative Center of Ján Kuciak decided to coordinate the Slovak initiative Safe.Journalism.sk in order to monitor the attacks against journalists and assist those who have become targets of such attacks. The initiative is developed in cooperation with Reporters Without Borders, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Slovakia, and the Dutch system for protection of journalists, PersVeilig.
